The Zebra project, completed in July 2013, was designed to reduce child road injuries near schools in Almaty by improving pedestrian crossing visibility and traction.
Using international practice, crossings were treated with special anti-slip and high-contrast coating. The intervention targeted areas where school routes intersected busy roads and where basic safety infrastructure was insufficient.
Implemented with international grant support and local partners, the project aimed to create practical, scalable safety improvements for daily school commutes.
