In 2002, Rotary Club of Almaty launched a major humanitarian mobility project: distributing 240 wheelchairs to people with disabilities in Almaty and across Kazakhstan.
The effort was a cross-sector collaboration. Tucson-Almaty Sister Cities Committee coordinated international collection and shipment; Rotary Club of Almaty managed in-country coordination and distribution; Counterpart International financed container shipping; and Philip Morris Kazakhstan supported final-mile delivery to recipients nationwide.
With a total budget of USD 48,000, the initiative delivered immediate practical support and became one of the club's early high-impact social projects.
