A Walker for Dias: International Cooperation Gives a Child the Gift of Mobility

In June–December 2011, Rotary Club of Almaty partnered with Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr Rotary Club (Wales, District 1180) to provide a seven-year-old Almaty boy with a walking frame that changed his life.

A Walker for Dias: International Cooperation Gives a Child the Gift of Mobility

Rotary Club of Almaty, together with the Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr Rotary Club and the Governor of Region 1180 (Wales), carried out a social project between June and December 2011.

In this project, Rotarians sought to provide seven-year-old Dias — a boy from Almaty living with disabilities — with a walking frame that would enable him to move independently. The project was realised with the support of David Bathers, his club colleagues, personal friends, and the Governor of Region 1180, who donated £500 towards the purchase of the walking apparatus. Rotary Club of Almaty, in turn, raised funds to cover transportation of the equipment from London to Almaty. International courier company Central Asia Parcel provided a very favourable rate for the shipment.

Rotarians from Wales were also able to organise an additional walking frame, which was delivered to Almaty by Kazakhstani national Arman Samilov, who — by a fortunate coincidence — was returning from Wales to Almaty at exactly the right time in October 2011.

Rotary, and the people you know and trust, truly change lives for the better. What matters most is being able to see the equipment your funds have purchased delivered to its destination and placed in the hands of the person who needs it most.
