Rotary Alley: Club Members Plant 85 Trees in New Almaty Park

In the spring of 2000, Rotary Club of Almaty members and their families rolled up their sleeves and joined a city-wide community clean-up day — a subbotnik — planting an "Rotary Alley" of 85 trees in a new park on Zharokova Street, below Khodzanova Street in Almaty.

The park has since grown and flourished, and is now known as "Yuzhny Park" (Southern Park) — a beloved green space in the city. Those 85 saplings, planted by Rotarian hands, have matured into a shady alley that serves the community every day.

This initiative reflected Rotary's enduring commitment to the environment and to building stronger, greener communities — one tree, one neighbourhood, one city at a time. Twenty-five years later, the alley stands as a living testament to what Rotarians can achieve when they act together with purpose and care for their city.
