In the Republic of Kazakhstan, a state programme for the inclusion of children with special needs into mainstream education — known as "inclusion" — has been adopted. At the early stages, however, educational institutions face an acute shortage of funds to open psychological and pedagogical correction classrooms. School No. 184 in Almaty approached Rotary Club of Almaty for support in establishing such a classroom.
At the same time, the club engaged with the organisers of the Centre for Social Inclusive Programmes (parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, ASD) and the Sensory Integration Correction and Development Centre "Ray of Light" (Luch Sveta). These centres help children acquire communication skills and integrate into society, supporting parents in understanding and nurturing their children — giving them hope that their children will one day live full, independent lives.
After studying the situation and needs of these educational centres, Rotary Club of Almaty turned to its long-standing partner, Philips Kazakhstan, which agreed to co-sponsor the project. With the funds raised, didactic materials and mental and physical correction equipment were purchased for children with ASD.
Books and teaching aids were also acquired for the city's "pilot" inclusive classroom — where ASD children study alongside typical peers who voluntarily act as "tutors" in line with the Centre's programme. For School No. 184, the club purchased furniture to equip the psychological and pedagogical correction room.
The "Ray of Kindness" project was carried out between April and December 2018. We extend our deepest gratitude to our partner, Philips Kazakhstan, for their invaluable support.
