Aksai Children's Hospital: Rotary Almaty Transforms ICU Ward with Art and Renovation

In February 2017, Rotary Club of Almaty completed another project at Aksai Children's Clinical Hospital — the renovation and artistic decoration of the intensive care (ICU) ward. This is the room where children recovering from surgery wake from anaesthesia and regain consciousness after operations.

Before the project, the scene that greeted these young patients was a bleak one: the ceilings, floors, and walls of the ICU were in a sorry state. A dull, grey environment.

But following the great success of the club's previous project — the restoration and artistic painting of the hospital reception area less than a year earlier — the same approach was applied here. After an almost complete overhaul of the ward (replacement of windows and doors, plastering, priming, painting of ceilings and walls, and new flooring), the club once again turned to a friend of the club: young Almaty artist Zhanel Zhubanova. The result was a complete transformation — a bright, cheerful mural of colourful balloons, clouds and friendly characters now greets every child who opens their eyes in the ward.

Because when children wake up from an operation, they deserve to see something beautiful.
